Girls Varsity Water Polo · Girls Water Polo Wins In First Round of D2 Playoffs

Girls Water Polo beat San Pasqual in the first round of the D2 CIF Playoffs 7-5.  With the upset victory the Lady Sultans will travel to play #2 Poway this Saturday 2/9 at 5:15pm.  Great job Girls advancing to the D2 Quarterfinals!

Despite less than ideal start, going down 0-3 on the first three possessions of the first quarter, the girls water polo team rallied with a strong effort and won their first round playoff game, 7 to 5 on a cold Wednesday night at Rancho Bernardo High School. Upsetting the 7th seeded San Pasqual Golden Eagles was no easy feat for our very young 10th seeded team; 10 first-year varsity players got their first taste of CIF playoff water polo. Strong interior play by Sophomore Center Maysen Seile (4 goals), stellar perimeter defense by Senior Attacker Stevie Genet (3 assists), and an absolute monster of a game Senior Sarah Wilson Center/Center Defender (2 goals, 3 assists, 4 steals) see the team into the Quarterfinals on Saturday in La Jolla. Six unanswered goals in the first and second quarters, punctuated by Emily Thommer Thompson’s game winning goal late in the second quarter and Sarah Wilson’s coffin nail backhander in the 4th was enough to end San Pasqual’s fine season. Junior Hannah Wilson made 12 saves and had one assist in her first CIF start in goal.
