Every year at the end of May Santana holds its annual Senior Awards. The Athletic Department is proud of each and everyone of these amazing student athletes that earned this years athletic awards!
Male Athlete of the Year:
The Britt Edmundson Memorial award is given to our Male Athlete of the year. Britt Edmundson died almost eleven years ago in a tragic car accident. He was one of the best athletes to come out of Santana High School. He was the quarterback of the football team, captain of the basketball team, and still holds the school record in the pole vault at 14 feet and the high jump record a 6’9 3/4″. The Britt Edmundson Memorial Award for Male Athlete of the year goes to Nathan Temple.
Nathan Temple (Football)- Nathan was Second Team All CIF Offense, First Team All League Offense and was the Grossmont Valley League Co-Offensive Player of the Year. Nathan was a member of the All East County Team and helped lead the Football team to the CIF Championship game and was a leader on and off the field and was always positive and would help bring up his teammates when they were down. He worked hard in the weight room, in the classroom and on the field. Nathan would end his career with a handful of Santana Passing Records. He was also a member of the Union Tribune All Academic Team
Female Athlete of the Year:
The Female Athlete of the year is named in honor of Mary Daniels. Mary taught at Santana for 39 years. She was the gymnastics coach here for 17 years. Her teams won 14 League Championships and 7 CIF Championships. Mary was the Athletic Director here for 25 years and earned county and state recognition as a coach and an athletic director. This years Female Athlete of the Year is Lakaila-Aquiningoc-David.
Lakaila-Aquiningoc-David (Volleyball, Basketball, Softball) – Lakaila is a Tri-Sport Athlete and an All League Athlete in all three sports. In Volleyball she was Second Team All League and the teams Most Valuable Player. In Basketball she was First Team All League and Named the Grossmont Valley Player of the Year helping lead her team to the Grossmont Valley League Title. In Softball she was a First Team All League player as an 11th grader and would have been again if the Spring Season was not cut short due to Covid-19. Lakaila was also on the Union Tribune All Academic Team in all three Sports. An amazing hard worker on and off the field of play and great teammate.
Santana Scholar Athlete:
Santana’s Scholar Athlete goes to our schools top male and female athlete that got it done in the classroom as on the athletic field of play.
Female Scholar Athlete: Jordan Bockart (4.5 gpa) (Field Hockey, Track)
Jordan was Captain of the Field Hockey Team and was Honorable Mention to All League. In Track and Field she was the teams MVP in 2018 , 2019, and most likely would have been again this year if the Track season was not cut short due to Covid-19. Jordan would have been an All League candidate in Track and was a member of the Union Tribune All Academic Team in both Sports.
Male Scholar Athlete: Luke Simanck (4.05 gpa) (Football, Lacrosse)
Luke was a two way player for the Football team earning First Team All League on Offense and Defense. He was the teams best Offensive and Defensive Linemen and helped lead the Football team to the CIF Championship game. In Lacrosse he was one of the strongest players and would have been an All League candidate if the Lacrosse season was not cut short due to Covid-19. He was a member of the Union Tribune All Academic Team in both Sports.
Santana Sportsmanship Award:
Santana’s Sportsmanship award is about displaying good character when participating in sports and in life in general. It’s about respect for opponents, officials, teammates, coaches, and everyone around us.
Female Sportsmanship Award: Tatumn Salaz (Soccer)
Tatumn is a perfect example of sportsmanship. She plays hard, she leads by example, and is a true competitor. All the while, showing respect to the game, opponents, and referees. She was the team captain, and was voted First Team All League and Union Tribune All Academic Team.
Male Sportsmanship Award: Lane Dukes (Soccer)
Lane was Captain of the Soccer Team played hard and lead by example. He also respected all aspects of the game and would always go out of his way to help his teammates. He was First Team All League and one of the top goal scorers in San Diego County ending his career second on the all time goal scoring list for Santana. Member of the Union Tribune All Academic Team.
US Army Athletic Award:
Every year the US Army picks one male and female athlete that exemplify outstanding qualities of Sportsmanship.
Female US Army Award: Emily Cocita (Sideline Cheer, Competition Cheer)
Emily was a captain for the cheerleading squad putting in countless hours training and helping out teammates. She was an active participate in the monthly captains meetings for all sports and exemplified what it means to be a Sultan. Emily helped lead the Comp Cheer Team to Nations taking home the Championship this year. Member of the Union Tribune All Academic Team.
Male US Army Award: Nathan Hughes (Football, Soccer, Baseball)
Nathan was Second Team All League in Football and was Kicker of the Year. In Soccer he was Second Team All League and was a Captain on the team. To stay involved in the Spring Nathan helped the baseball team as the Manager showing his passion of athletics and what it means to be a Sultan. Member of the Union All Academic Team in Football and Soccer.
US Marine Athletic Award:
Every year the US Marines picks one male and female athlete that exemplify outstanding qualities of Sportsmanship.
Female US Marine Award: Makenzie Sims (Field Hockey, Softball)
Makenzie was one of the top players on the field hockey and softball teams and was a hard worker on and off the field of play. She would put the team first and worked to help others. She often was the first to show up and the last to leave always striving to be the best on the field of play. She was a member of the Union Tribune All Academic Team in both sports.
Male US Marine Award: Donnie Kelly (Football, Volleyball)
Donnie was Honorable Mention to All League in Football and helped lead the team to the CIF Championship game where he was got the sportsmanship award for the title game. He was a leader on both teams football and volleyball. Donnie is always positive and works hard on and off the field of play he is a perfect teammate. Donnie was a member of the Union Tribune All Academic Team in both sports.
BEFY Community Scholarship: (Britt Edmundson and Frank Yancy)
Every year Santana athletes are nominated for the BEFY Community Scholarship in memory of Britt Edmundson and Frank Yancy. The BEFY community board then selects a set few of athletes that hit all the criteria of Britt and Frank. Once selected the BEFY Foundation awarded $500 to each of these fantastic Sultan athletes!

Lane Dukes- Soccer, AVID Student, 1st Team All League, Captain,
